Uber is officially a cab firm, says European court

Image
The ride-hailing firm argued it was an information society service - helping people to make contact with each other electronically - and not a cab firm. The case arose after Uber was told to obey local taxi rules in Barcelona. Uber said the verdict would make little difference to the way it operated in Europe, but experts say the case could have implications for the gig economy. An Uber spokesperson said: "This ruling will not change things in most EU countries where we already operate under transportation law. "However, millions of Europeans are still prevented from using apps like ours. As our new CEO has said, it is appropriate to regulate services such as Uber and so we will continue the dialogue with cities across Europe. This is the approach we'll take to ensure everyone can get a reliable ride at the tap of a button."

US Coldest night

Image
Parts of the US are expecting what could be the coldest night in the country's history, with temperatures expected to feel as cold as -35C. The east coast is in the grip of an Arctic blast with a storm that brought more than a foot of snow, hurricane-force winds and coastal floods. In Boston, cars were frozen into the ground after floodwater turned to ice, while conditions were so bad in some places that diggers were needed to rescue people. Sky's US Correspondent Hannah Thomas-Peter said "much worse" was forecast for the weekend, including "record-breaking temperatures and strong winds".

FIRE AND FURY BOOK

Image
Donald Trump calls bombshell author Michael Wolff a 'total loser' in Fire and Fury book row Late on Friday night in the US, Mr Trump said on Twitter: “Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book. “He used Sloppy Steve Bannon, who cried when he got fired and begged for his job. Now Sloppy Steve has been dumped like a dog by almost everyone. Too bad!” Among the book’s claims is the suggestion Mr Trump trusts women more than men, his confusion over the Klu Klux Klan’s beliefs and his preference of eating McDonald’s amid fears of being poisoned. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson jumped to the US leader’s defence over Mr Wolff’s allegation that White House staff believed Mr Trump’s “mental powers were slipping”.

North Korea Likely Preparing for New Rocket Engine Test at Sohae

Image
Between November 23 and December 25, the rail-mounted environment shelter was moved from its position flush against the vertical engine test stand to the center of the concrete apron. Tire tracks are visible on the concrete apron and in front of the vehicle garage on both dates. While there appears to be no activity at the stand’s fuel/oxidizer bunkers, this absence of activity has not been a reliable indicator for rocket engine test preparations in the past. The exact reason for the recent movement of the environment shelter and the presence of tire tracks is unclear. As noted in previous reports, the shelter has been moved to its current position on the concrete apron either to permit the receipt and preparation of rocket engines prior to testing or to unload them after a test. Both color and near-infrared imagery, however, show no indications that an engine test has taken place since November 23, suggesting that if the current activity is test related, it is likely preparations for ...

Pakistan Foreign Minister No Longer Sees an Alliance With U.S.

Image
“We are not alone,” Mr. Asif (Pakistan Foreign Minister ) said. ISLAMABAD—The U.S. failed to behave as an ally and turned Islamabad into a “whipping boy” for its own shortcomings in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s foreign minister said, after the Trump administration suspended security-related aid to the country. “We do not have any alliance” with the U.S., Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in an interview Friday. “This is not how allies behave.” Washington said Thursday that security assistance to Islamabad was on hold until the Pakistani government took “decisive action” against terror groups on its territory, including the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network. The announcement followed a tweet from President Donald Trump earlier this week alleging that Pakistan gives “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan.” Islamabad denied his claim and has long decried similar allegations. Mr. Asif said Pakistan’s recent counter-terr...

Pakistan New Air Base

Image
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) formally inaugurated its newly built main operating base (MOB), PAF Bholari. In his inauguration speech, the PAF’s Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Sohail Aman stated that the new base would enable the PAF to support the Pakistan Army “more efficiently.” The CAS added that PAF Bholari will also “augment and supplement” the Pakistan Navy’s operations. Located in Thatta District in Sindh, northeast of Karachi, construction of PAF Bholari began in December 2015. At that time, the current CAS of the PAF had implied that PAF Bholari’s focus would be on the “conventional threat” – i.e. the PAF’s traditional focus on India.

79,000 Jobs in Canada

Image
Canada added 79,000 jobs last month, blowing past expectations and pushing the jobless rate to its lowest level since 1976. The jobless rate was pushed down two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.7 per cent, Statistics Canada reported Friday. That's the lowest on record since comparable data became available 42 years ago. Economists polled by Bloomberg were expecting a flat showing, with about 2,000 jobs added. Every province added jobs during the month, but more than half of the new jobs came in Alberta and Quebec, with each adding more than 26,000 jobs. "Quebec was probably the most compelling story throughout the year, with job growth running strong and the unemployment rate plunging to a record low [of 4.9 per cent]," Bank of Montreal economist Robert Kavcic noted in a report to clients. The loonie jumped on Friday's news, gaining almost three-quarters of a cent to change hands at 80.74 cents US shortly after the numbers came out at 8:30 a.m. eastern tim...

Disadvantages of Coffee

Image
6 Disadvantages and Risks of Coffee Drinking   Bad coffee can be toxic. Bad quality coffee can have a lot of impurities in it, which can cause sickness, headache or a general bad feeling. This can happen if your coffee is made from beans that have been over ripped or otherwise ruined. Even one ruined bean can make your cup toxic. If you invest and buy high quality, speciality coffee you don’t have to worry about this. Coffee can kill you. Yes, if you drink 80-100 cups (23 litres) in a short session. This dose is lethal and will amount in 10-13 grams of caffeine within your body. Before you reach this point, however, you'll be vomiting most of it out since 23 litres of any liquid is a lot. Even drinking 23 litres of water can kill you. Coffee can cause insomnia and restlessness. Again, it's the caffeine working here. Your recommended maximum amount of caffeine is 400 milligrams, roughly the amount that you’ll get from 4 cups of coffee. If you’re caffeine-sensitive, be ...
